Company's new technology will allow faster uploads, downloads
Knology officially launches today a free upgrade to new technology for its residential Internet customers.
The technology - DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) - gives residential Internet customers faster speeds by bonding or combining several channels into a single connection. Customers will notice increased speeds for uploads and downloads.
The technology also provides significant advances in security and reliability, said Tony Palermo, Knology's vice president of marketing.
"It's a big deal for us, and it's a bigger deal for our customers," he said.
The customer notification process starts today, said Palermo, though, "if not all, the majority of customers are already seeing increased speeds." Palermo said one customer's blog comment noted that downloading video that usually takes 30 minutes took only eight minutes.
"There are more and more applications where people are sharing video, music and pictures with friends and family members," Palermo said, and the upgrade significantly enhances their ability to upload.
Knology Internet will deliver speeds of 12 megabyte download/2 megabyte upload; and Knology Edge will deliver speeds of 25 megabyte download/5 megabyte upload.
Huntsville is the first of Knology's 12 markets to have this new technology.
"From a technology standpoint, (Huntsville) is our flagship market," Palermo said. "High-tech utilization is through the roof in Huntsville."
Knology's other Alabama markets are Montgomery and Dothan; as well as Panama City and Pinellas County, Fla.; Knoxville; Augusta, Columbus and West Point, Ga.; Charleston, S.C.; and Rapid City and Sioux Falls, S.D.
Knology will soon release details of a free increase in speed for Huntsville businesses with Knology Internet service.
